What is a Green Schoolyard?

PlayCore and the Children and Nature Network have joined forces and their collective expertise to raise awareness and overcome barriers in the implementation of green schoolyards. Together, we will survey and engage schools, establish best practices, create model environments, and share benefits, impact, and outcomes to inform and grow green schoolyards across the US.

Evidence shows that green schoolyards are highly beneficial to academic performance, creative play, physical activity and mental health. The Children and Nature Network defines green schoolyards as multi-functional school grounds that include places for students, teachers, parents and community members to play, learn, explore and grow. Their mission is to support the development of the program across the country.
