Volkening Lake Fitness Area Receives Fitness National Demonstration Site Recognition

PlayCore, a leading designer, manufacturer, and marketer of a broad range of play and recreation products is excited to recognize Volkening Lake Fitness Area as a National Demonstration Site for Outdoor Adult Fitness. Located in Schaumburg, IL, the fitness site encourages the community to engage in active lifestyles.

The Schaumburg Park District is dedicated to serving the community by providing a variety of recreational opportunities, programming, and environmental stewardship. As the sixth largest park district in Illinois, Schaumburg currently maintains over 1,100 acres of parkland, including 55 playgrounds and 34 ballfields.

“We were very excited to build the Volkening Lake Fitness Area,” said Tony LaFrenere, executive director. “Our 2013 Citizen Attitude and Interest Survey showed our residents have a strong interest in outdoor fitness. Since opening in 2015, the Fitness Area has continued to grow in popularity with more and more residents using it as a part of their fitness regimen.”

The Volkening Lake Fitness Area features a cluster arrangement of equipment that was specifically selected to address total body fitness through a variety of aerobic, muscle/strength, core, and balance/flexibility exercises. Placed next to Volkening Lake and the walking trail, the site provides a place for all to engage in healthy active lifestyles.

As mentioned in Outdoor Adult Fitness Park™: Best Practices for Promoting Community Health by Increasing Physical Activity, “Exercising outdoors provides all the physical benefits of indoor exercise (blood flow, improved cardiovascular health, improved strength, flexibility, endurance, etc.) and can also provide vital exposure to sunlight that increases important levels of vitamin D, unlike indoor exercise.”

The new National Demonstration Site will receive a certificate of recognition, be added to PlayCore’s national registry located at www.pointsmap.com/playcore, and is promoted actively to other communities wishing to promote health & wellness and best practices.
