Lincoln and Kenwood Elementary Schools Recognized as Play On! National Demonstration Sites

Lincoln and Kenwood Elementary Schools in Hammond, IN were recognized as Play On! National Demonstration Sites.

These two school playgrounds have both received much needed upgrades that allow more recess time for the students and new opportunities for imaginative play for the community. The announcement of the new improvements created a lot of excitement for the families.

“Giving our Kenwood students a playground that encourages play, ignites imagination, and opens the doors to new friendships is something our community has rallied behind for many years. With this dream finally coming to fruition, we are looking forward to the joy this playground is sure to bring our students and community,” says Kenwood Principal Amy Yoos.

Lincoln and Kenwood utilized an evidence-based approach to playground design in partnership with the playground manufacturer that promotes play and youth physical fitness for the students that comes with curriculum for PE teachers to integrate with recess planning to encourage more outdoor recreation.

IMG_1352.jpg#asset:10514The new playgrounds and curriculum are intended to provide a well-rounded and developmentally appropriate challenges for each age and ability. 

“At Lincoln Elementary, we believe in doing what is best for our students. We refer to ourselves as the ‘Lincoln Family’ because that’s what we are. Our students, parents, and staff look out for each other. We fight for each other. We go above and beyond for each other. We step outside of our comfort zones for each other. Our new playground will now give us the opportunity to build more laughs and memories with each other,” said Lincoln Principal Yolanda Bracey.

PlayCore recognizes Lincoln and Kenwood Elementary School as Play On! National Demonstration Sites following the research and programming of the Play On! Program, designed by PlayCore in partnership with SHAPE America, as they promote physical activity through the six elements of play to create developmentally appropriate challenges and fun for all.

To continue to celebrate the Lincoln and Kenwood Elementary’s commitment to advancing play and recreation through best practices, the schools will receive a certificate of recognition, become a part of a network of potential research sites, and will be promoted actively to other communities wishing to create recreation spaces using design and/or programming.
