The City of Portland saw the opportunity to expand multigenerational play and recreation and renovate existing facilities in the community. Today, Portland is outfitted with exciting new opportunities for intergenerational recreation, including a playground, splash pad and shade structures. Municipal Park also has five baseball fields, a basketball court and track.
The park features sporting fields with sound systems, scoreboards, batting cages, common areas, concessions and restrooms, a covered basketball court, a covered fitness station, a jogging trail, a splash pad, and a covered playground with turf surfacing, shade structures with picnic tables and grills, maintenance building, an expanded parking lot, and municipal park entrance signs.
The Sports Complex includes four softball fields that are capable of hosting soccer games in the outfield, a youth football field that can also be used for soccer along with a multi-purpose turf field. In addition, there is a natural grass multipurpose field, a sound system, concessions and restrooms, covered picnic tables and barbecue sites, dugouts, sports lighting, scoreboards, covered bleachers, batting cages, a practice field, a covered playground and splash pad, fencing, an expanded parking lot, and entrance signs with planters.
In addition to the multigenerational opportunities for local children and families, sports tourism is bringing tournaments from all over Texas to the community, and the complexes, as well as local businesses are benefiting from an influx of teams and their families.
When the complex opened in 2017, then-Mayor David Krebs stated “We’ve always said these sports fields were about building a place for families — and we’ve never lost sight of that.” The dedication of the city of Portland and those that worked on the project will help to ensure that residents and visitors to Portland will have opportunities for active, dynamic intergenerational recreation opportunities in the outdoors for many generations to come.
