Outdoor Adult Fitness

Outdoor Adult Fitness
With the constant increase in adult obesity, encouraging regular physical activity is an important consideration for public health. It is time to think about new ways to make physical activity and exercise more accessible, available, affordable, pleasurable, and ultimately, more useful to society. Research is supporting the notion that Outdoor Fitness Parks for adults provide a variety of relevant outcomes to community inhabitants through their increased participation in more moderate to vigorous physical activity.

The Science
Outdoor adult fitness spaces are a growing way to help get adults actively engaged in healthy activity. Creating an effective outdoor fitness space can be a challenge without the right information to help guide your choices. With pieces of equipment generally numbering between 5-20, the right choices are critical to ensure a well-rounded workout. By offering physical education and outdoor fitness opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, we can promote healthy behavior, encourage active lifestyles, and encourage community engagement

Why Request Outdoor Adult Fitness?
This guidebook was created in conjunction with three scholars, each with a different fitness focused specialty. They reviewed the published research on the unique benefits of outdoor fitness activity, and helped us identify the five areas of a well rounded workout that should be included in any fitness space. The book provides best-practice design guidelines for aligning to health benefits and total body fitness when designing outdoor fitness spaces. It also reviews meaningful strategies for implementation and sustainability of the space, provides information on marketing and programming, a variety of ways to track outcomes, and a series of case examples highlighting the unique ways communities brought fitness opportunities to their spaces. From planning, to design, to programming and measuring outcomes, this guide is a valuable resource for any community wishing to increase physical fitness in its adult population.
Outdoor fitness spaces designed with us utilizing this research are eligible for the National Demonstration Site Award program. Learn how we're changing the face of outdoor fitness in a positive, engaging way!
