Creating Universally Designed Play Environments for People of All Ages and Abilities Play is the right of every child, and people of all ages and abilities should be able to play on the playground. This interactive seminar provides valuable information and resources for creating universally designed playgrounds that are inclusive of all people. Strategies for encouraging physical and social inclusion will be explored through seven uniquely defined principles of inclusive design. Participants will gain a renewed passion for going beyond the minimum accessibility requirements, and walk away with a deeper understanding of the importance and value of creating a truly unique environment that allows everyone to play! Learning Objectives: • Apply seven principal of universal design to create inclusive, intergenerational play environments for children, families, and communities • Recognize the importance of universally designed play spaces that remove physical and social barriers to ensure meaningful play experiences • Identify design features that consider the physical, social/emotional, communicative, sensory, and cognitive development of children that builds on their strengths and needs • Utilize a variety of tools and resources that can assist in the development of new or retrofitting an existing play environment that ensures meaningful play experiences for everyone This program is developed in partnership with PlayCore & Utah State University’s Center for Persons with Disabilities .
